The Idea

Our journey began with a simple goal: We wished to expand our knowledge and skills in programming. However, we soon realized that "just programming for the sake of it" wasn’t enough. We desired to create a real tangible tool. A useful product. In order to achieve this, we needed an idea. What followed were countless brainstorm sessions where the two of us agreed, disagreed and explored concepts all around. Eventually we settled on a marriage between our psychology background and our love for programming...

The idea of the Adverse Impact App was born

As mentioned, we held countless brainstorm sessions and meetings during our project. Putting our heads together was required from the very conception untill the release of our app. To visualize our ideas we used an online whiteboard named "Miro". As we added ideas and pitches, the whiteboard grew in size and content. It is easy to underestimate the amount of thinking and decisions that need to be applied and made to get a succesfull final result.

Our dynamic deserves a special highlight. Although we both share certain aspects like ideals and dreams, we seem to differ on our approach towards the project. Thijs is someone who moves fast and bold, while Roberto is generally more carefull and considerate. This combination worked well for us. The moment one of us wanted to go too fast, the other reigned him in, and if that person happened to be losing himself in the details, the other put the project back on track. Working together was never without challenges, but in the end we found a ying and yang within one another.

The emotional support as project partners cannot be understated. While making the app we faced many difficulties and moments of frustrations. We could have given up many times in our journey. This idea wasn't our first. It was our third after two failed attempts. These moments could have been a stopping point for us. However we persevered by being able to lean on eachother.

Key Background Elements

Psychology Background

In 2021 the two of us graduated with a degree in organizational psychology. A significant moment was a speech given on our graduation day. A professor emphasized the importance of technology in the field of psychology. It strengthened our belief in our app about: Adverse Impact.

Digital Minded

We wanted to act on our beliefs and took programming as an optional subject in university. Since the modern world is defined by a continuous strengthening of technology, the only logical course of action was to start expanding our knowledge and proficiency in these 21st century skills. We grew more confident in the role of digitization in the world.

The Drive to Create

Underlying these core elements sits a driver that's perhaps the most personal of all. The two of us share a desire to create a product that we can truly call our own. Just like many others around us we want to prove ourselves to the world. The dream that we could come together and make something tangible and functional.
